Limited Edition Krugerrands

The South African Mint has been minting Proof Krugerrands since 1967.

The 1967 Proof Krugerrand was produced with no frosting on the design

The 1968 proof Krugerrands were produced with frosting only on the Springbok, while the ’68 frosted Krugerrand has frosting on both the bust as well as the Springbok. Proof Krugerrands minted from 1969 have been issued with frosting on both the bust of Paul Kruger as well as the Springbok.

The first Krugerrand’s to be minted with a mintmark were produced in 1997, being the “Sabi Sabi” Krugerrand and the 30’th anniversary Krugerrand. Kugerrand’s which portray specific mintmarks have only been minted on a more regular basis since 2001

The first proof Krugerrand's were minted in 1967, however these were not frosted, as we know the proof Krugerrand's of today.

In 1968, 10,000 proof Krugerrand's were minted of which only 1, 044 Krugerrand's were frosted. These coins were only frosted on the reverse. It was only in 1969 that Krugerrand's were frosted on both the obverse and the reverse. The table to the right illustrates proof Krugerrand mintages. As one can see on the table that in 1997 only

1, 663 proof Krugerrand's were minted.

The first truly limited or low mintage Krugerrand's were in actual fact only minted in 1980, being the 1980 proof Krugerrand fractional sets
