The male African elephants are the largest extant terrestrial animals and can reach a height of 4m and weigh in at around 7,000kg.
Elephants are herbivorous and can be found in different habitats including savannahs, forests, deserts and marshes. They however prefer to stay near water, and can live up to
70 years in the wild.
The common obverse of all 4 different size 24 carat gold 2008 Natura Elephant proof coins depict a ¾ frontal view of an elephant head, above a herd of elephant, and the wording “South Africa”. The mintage year being 2008 is depicted at the top of the coin.
The reverse of the 2008 1 ounce Natura Elephant coin which has a mintage of 1,995 coins, portrays a frontal image of an elephant above a frieze of an elephant herd. The wording “Natura” is inscribed to the left and the denomination R100 above.
The limited edition 1 ounce Natura launch coin depicts the SAM (South African Mint) mintmark on the obverse of the coin, and is presented in a wooden case with a plaque featuring different elephant views.
